Berlin Announces Autumn Leaf Collection Procedures

Roadside collection starts Oct. 31, though they can be dropped off by residents at the transfer station earlier.

BERLIN, CT — The leaves are still clinging to their branches, but the march of autumn will not stop.

And when they do fall to the ground, the Town of Berlin has a plan to scoop them up.

The Berlin Public Works Department announced Monday several curbside leaf collection dates.

Leaves will be picked up on, or near, residents' trash day during the weeks of Oct. 31 – Nov. 4; Nov. 14 - 18; and Nov. 28 - Dec. 2.

Residents wishing to have leaves picked up at the curb must put them in biodegradable brown paper bags and leave them at the curb on their regular trash day during the specified week.

Plastic bags are not allowed.

Keep all leaf bags well away from automated trash containers.

Grass clippings, yard waste and twigs cannot be mixed with leaves.

And don't take rake leaves into the gutter. This is a violation of the anti-litter ordinance, and subject to a fine.

Those who wish to dispose of leaves on their own, may bring them to the drop-off area at 19 Town Farm Lane (off Massirio Drive), Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., on Saturdays through October from 8 a.m. to noon, and extended Saturday hours Oct. 22 and 29, and November (5, 12, 19, 26) from 8 a.m. to 3: p.m.

All bags and containers must be emptied and removed from the drop-off area inside the Berlin Transfer Station (19 Town Farm Lane).

The transfer station will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 24) and Friday, Nov. 25.

Visit the town’s website for Saturday hours throughout the winter.
