Berlin elementary school students this week are trying to come up with a name for the Berlin Police Department's newest police canine.

BERLIN, CT — It's not a well-kept secret many police departments are facing challenges finding enough staff members to better fight the bad guys.

And the Berlin Police Department has utilized one unusual source in its quest for law and order: the Pawtucket Animal Shelter in Pawtucket, R.I.

According to the department late last week, the Berlin PD has "hired" a yet-to-be-named bloodhound via the shelter in a canine rags-to-riches story for the ages.

Once trained, she will help police sniff out the criminals and any evidence required for their prosecution.

"This sweet girl, who is just a pup, will be attending upcoming specialized tracking training and will be paired with Officer Michael Patterson," wrote the BPD via social media.

"She came to us as a shelter dog, rescued from the Pawtucket Animal Shelter in Rhode Island."

The department thanked their friends in Rhode Island for matching the beautiful bloodhound with the BPD.

And, while training is in her future, the next real step is actually finding a name for her.

The community weighed in over the weekend via the department's social media page and police came up with three finalists for the new law enforcer.

Next up is the input from Berlin's elementary school students, who will have a final decision to make via a K-9 naming referendum of sorts.

Meanwhile, folks might want to take a gander at the BPD's Facebook page to look at some sweet pictures of the happy canine cop as she awaits a name.

Stay tuned, an announcement on the dog's name should be coming soon.
