My wife's mother, who is now deceased, had a dear friend named Emily, who resided in Berlin, Connecticut, until she was moved to a small efficiency apartment, where, although 94 years of age and legally blind, she lives alone, depending on daily visits of home healthcare aides for feeding and cleaning and socializing.
My wife and I both took care of our parents at home before they died. None of our parents wanted to be placed in a home for the elderly and wanted to live at home with their children. My father lived nearly an entire year after he was diagnosed with congested heart failure; my mother nearly one year-and-a-half years.

I am so glad that I was able to care for them at home. I was present when both of them died. I am extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to give back so very little for everything they had done for me over my lifetime. I had wonderful, loving parents. And so did my wife.
Emily is like an aunt to my wife. She calls her every so often to ask her how she is, or to tell her that she had a dream of her mother, or to wish her happy birthday or Merry Christmas, or just to say that she loves her.

We have been bringing Emily homemade Italian dishes, which the visiting nurses, of course, do not serve her and which she loves. It is such fun watching her eat the homemade pasta, meatballs, sausage, lasagna, cappellettis, pasta tai, etc., and, God forbid, if we should fail to include Italian bread because that would necessitate an emergency run to Stew Leonards to get a loaf. For those of you who do not know, old Italian women do not eat pasta without fresh Italian bread!
Tomorrow my wife and I will be bringing another serving of homemade Italian pasta and meatballs to Emily, along with some Italian bread from San Remo's in town. She will call sometime in the morning to make certain we do not forget. We won't.
It's the little things that matter in life, especially for family and dear old friends.
