Collins' GOP Nod Sets Up Rematch For 6th Senate

BERLIN, CT — A longtime New Britain resident was chosen by 6th Senate District Republicans to seek a seat representing New Britain, Berlin, and a section of Farmington.

Republican delegates unanimously voted to endorse longtime New Britain resident Tremell Collins for the GOP nomination for state Senate.

It would be a rematch of the race in 2022 when he was defeated by incumbent state Sen. Rick Lopes, D-New Britain, who has registered with the state to seek another term.

The nomination came at the 6th District GOP convention at Berlin Town Hall Tuesday night.

Tony Cane, a delegate from New Britain, nominated Collins, according to a release sent out by the Collins campaign.

"Tremell's commitment to improving the lives of our residents is evident in his years of service and leadership," Cane said. "We need a representative who will prioritize our needs and effectively address our district's issues. Tremell is that leader and it is my honor to nominate him tonight."

Collins is a former member of the board of directors for HRA of New Britain and as a civilian advisor for the New Britain Police Explorers.

In 2015, Collins was elected to the city council, where he "played a pivotal role in facilitating downtown redevelopment, revitalizing the business district, enhancing streetscapes, and making strategic investments in the city’s infrastructure," wrote the GOP.

He is the former chairman of the New Britain Republicans and a current fire commissioner.

“I am Grateful and honored to accept the nomination for State Senate, I am committed to serving our community with integrity, passion, and dedication. Together, let's strive for progress and prosperity for all," Collins said after accepting the nomination.
