Friday Storms Slam Berlin Community

Heavy rains had Berlin responders rescuing flood-trapped motorists and prompted the closure of a town playground.

BERLIN, CT β€” Friday morning's deluge hit the Town of Berlin especially hard, with the town having to rescue motorists trapped in floodwaters and close a play area.

A massive rainstorm associated with a line of thunderstorms Friday morning negatively impacted the community playground at Worthington Ridge, Berlin.

"Due to amount of rain we have received in the past 24 hours, there are some safety hazards at Community Playground on Worthington Ridge," wrote town officials in an announcement.

"We have decided to close that playground temporarily for the weekend."

In addition, Berlin police and fire units spent much of Friday morning blocking off roads and trying to keep folks out of flash floodwaters on local streets.

The Berlin Police Department said the BFD was, even, rescuing drivers from vehicles stuck in water, including those on Meadow/Lower Lane, Hummingbird, Grandview/Newton and Farmington Avenue at Depot Road.

"Please avoid these area and do not go around cones or barricades and attempt to drive through deep water," wrote police.
