Love America? Show Berlin How Much In Local Decorating Contest

Berlin residents and businesses can enter a patriotic decorating contest through Aug. 26 with four $100 prizes available.

BERLIN, CT — The Town of Berlin is inviting residents and businesses to showcase their patriotic spirit as part of a community decorating contest celebrating America's 250th birthday.

Registration is now open for the "Berlin in Red, White & Blue Patriotic Decorating Contest," which encourages participants to decorate homes and businesses in red, white, and blue.

There is no entry fee, and organizers are accepting registrations through Aug. 26.

The contest is part of Berlin's observance of the nation's Semiquincentennial, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Participants may decorate a variety of outdoor spaces, including front porches, landscapes, gardens, storefronts, outdoor dining areas, windows, barns, and fences, provided the displays are visible from a public street.

Three judged award categories will each receive a $100 Visa gift card:

  • Spirit of 1776 Award, recognizing the home display that best embodies American patriotism, civic pride and the spirit of the nation's 250th anniversary.
  • Main Street Spark Award, honoring the business or restaurant display that best celebrates the anniversary through patriotic creativity, community engagement, and visual appeal.
  • Lights of Liberty Award, recognizing the home display with the most outstanding use of lighting and visual impact.

Participants may also choose whether to compete for the "We The People" Award, a People's Choice honor determined through public voting.

The contest schedule includes:

  • Registration: July 4-Aug. 26
  • Public voting for the "We The People" Award: Aug. 27-Sept. 4
  • Judging: Sept. 8-11
  • Winners announced: Sept. 14-18
  • Winner yard signs displayed through Sept. 26

Contest rules require displays to be located within Berlin town limits, remain in place through Sept. 26, comply with local regulations, and be safely installed without creating hazards for pedestrians or motorists.

Winning participants also agree to display a commemorative yard sign for approximately one week after the awards are announced or through Sept. 26.

Registration forms must be submitted by Aug. 26 either by mail to Berlin Town Clerk, Attention: Kate Wall, 240 Kensington Road, Berlin, CT 06037, or by email to kwall@berlinct.gov.
