Research poster presented at CREATE Conference
More than 250 talented students at Eastern Connecticut State University presented research and creative work at the university's second annual CREATE conference this past April. CREATE stands for Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern, and is the university's premier, academic year-end showcase. At the culminating event, students of all majors presented professional posters, live music, dance performances, artwork, photography, documentaries and panel discussions.

Sabrina Couceiro of Berlin, who majors in Biology, presented a research poster at the event. Couceiro's project, co-presented by three other classmates, was titled "Interdisciplinary Post-Apocalyptic Learning."
Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society

Chelsea Vujs, of Berlin, was welcomed into Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society on March 1, at the Western New England University chapter's annual induction ceremony. Vujs, who is majoring in Psychology, is a member of the Women's Basketball team at Western New England University.
As a component of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program to foster athletic excellence, the Athletic Department annually inducts deserving student-athletes in the National Student Athlete Honor Society. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes student-athletes who have completed five semesters of higher education, have earned a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4, and who exhibit distinguished character in the community.
Western New England University has a total of 17 honor societies on campus. More than 600 students were inducted into these organizations in the Spring 2016 semester.
Psi Chi honor society for psychology
On April 25, Eastern Connecticut State University inducted 43 psychology students into Psi Chi, the international honor society for psychology. Among the inductees was Alicia Maule of East Berlin. Maule majors in Pre-Early Childhood Education and Psychology.
Psi Chi's mission is to encourage excellence in scholarship and to foster the advancement of psychological science. Eastern students who are inducted into Psi Chi must declare a major or minor in psychology, have at least 12 credits of coursework in psychology and attain a 3.5 GPA in psychology and a 3.0 GPA overall.
Spring concert at ECSU
A number of talented student musicians and vocalists from Eastern Connecticut State University performed in concerts on April 23 and 24. The collaborative concerts included members of Eastern's Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers, Men's and Women's Choirs, Korean Samul Ensemble, String Trio, Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble.
Among the performers was Jacqueline Sternberg of Kensington, who majors in Sociology.
Coastal Carolina University graduate
Marisa Mangiafico, of Kensington, was among 1,100 candidates for graduation at Coastal Carolina University's commencement ceremonies on May 6 and 7, 2016. Mangiafico graduated with a Bachelor of Science in marine science.
Lacrosse athlete earns All-Liberty League honor
The Liberty League has announced its year-end award winners from women's lacrosse and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Erin Goodwin of Berlin has been named Honorable Mention.
A freshman, Goodwin started all 15 games for the Engineers in 2016, recording 21 ground balls and four draw controls. She notched a team-high 13 caused turnovers and chipped in offensively with one assist for one point.
In nine Liberty League games, Goodwin posted one assist, 13 ground balls, two draws and six caused turnovers.
Before attending Rensselaer, Goodwin was a four-year starter and captain at Berlin High School, where she earned All-State honors as senior. A four-year All-Academic selection, she helped the team to a Central Connecticut South Conference championship in 2015.
Goodwin also played soccer at Berlin and was a four-year member and three-year starter. A captain in her senior season, she helped the team to conference titles in 2011 and 2014.
The Engineers went 7-8 overall this season, including a 3-6 mark in Liberty League play.
Lambda Pi Eta honor society
A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students were recently inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for the field of communication.
Nicholas Germano of Berlin, who majors in Communication, was among the inductees.
The society recognizes students who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, a communication studies GPA of at least 3.25, are in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class, are enrolled in good standing and display a commitment to the field of communication.
