Original story: 2:20 a.m. Nov. 5

It appears it’ll be back to the drawing boards to find a way to deal with cramped quarters in an aging Berlin Police Department headquarters.

Residents rejected a ballot referendum to spend $21 million to build a new police station by a vote of 4,838 to 2,963, according to WTIC. The tally doesn’t include absentee ballots.

Chief Paul Fitzgerald has been lobbying the town to build a new headquarters because the 1972 facility is too small for the 40-member police force and is in disrepair.

The referendum apparently was a hot-button issue for voters as the registrar of voters office had to order and deliver more ballots to each of the polling precincts by noon, according to the WTIC report that can be found here.
