BERLIN, CT — The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department responded late Thursday night to a single-vehicle crash that damaged a utility pole, sparked a brush fire, and led to a temporary road closure.

At 11:40 p.m., Companies 3 and 2 were dispatched to Elton Road between Old Farms Place and Mallard Lane in Berlin for a reported crash, according to the BVFD.

Fire officials said a vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and rolled over before coming to rest against a tree.

The impact heavily damaged the pole, bringing down wires and igniting brush along the roadside, fire officials said.

The driver, who was the only occupant, fled the scene, according to the department.

Berlin Police Department officers located the individual a short distance away, assisted by a police dog K-9 unit.

Power was disconnected, and the brush fire was extinguished, fire officials said.

Elton Road will remain closed to through traffic for an extended period while utility crews repair the pole and restore power.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
