Train Slams Into ATV In Berlin, Catches Fire: FD

The accident required the evacuation of all passengers on the Amtrak passenger train.

BERLIN, CT — An Amtrak passenger train slammed into an all-terrain vehicle on the tracks in Berlin Sunday, causing a fire and prompting the train to be evacuated.

According to the Town of Berlin Fire Department, which oversees four volunteer fire companies, the incident happened at 10:46 a.m. Sunday on railroad tracks in the area of Norton Lane near Silver Lake.

That's when firefighters were called for a report of a collision between a train and an ATV.

When firefighters arrived, the ATV was in flames and was damaging the front exterior of the train car, the BFD wrote.

"Due to the location of the incident the fire was initially extinguished by FD personnel utilizing extinguishers while a hose line was extended to the site," wrote firefighters.

The fire department said the train was occupied at the time of the collision and passengers and crew were transferred to another train.

While the circumstances of how the train collided with the ATV were unclear, the fire department reported no injuries from civilians or first responders.

Responding units included the Berlin Fire Department, Berlin Police Department, Connecticut State Police, Hunters Ambulance Service, Amtrak police, and CT DOT/CT Rail.
