BETHEL, CT — State Rep. State Rep. Raghib Allie-Brennan has issued the following statement commemorating Pride month:

" June marks Pride month. As we commemorate more than 50 years of LGBTQ history and accomplishment, we must remember that the first Pride started as a riot led by transgender and people of color who sought an end to police brutality and oppression.

"This year’s Pride month comes as protests have broken out across America as the fight for social justice, equality and equal protection under the law, continues.

"As the only openly gay legislator of color in Connecticut’s General Assembly, one of only two openly gay legislators and the only legislator of color from the Greater Danbury Area, I have profound connection to the principles of Pride, as well as our current national crisis. Now, more than ever, the idea that if one of us is not free and treated unequally under our system, we are all in jeopardy rings loud and true.

"As we commemorate Pride, let’s take the time to remember our history and thank Marsha P. Johnson, Stormé DeLarverie, Sylvia Rivera, and the countless other LGBTQ people who had the courage to stand up for their rights so we can enjoy our freedoms. Let’s act in their honor and stand together, shoulder to shoulder, in the fight for equality for all."
