Bethel Schools Add New Official Holiday

Advocates said the move reflects growing efforts toward inclusion for Muslim students.

BETHEL, CT — Bethel Public Schools will officially recognize Eid al-Fitr as a school holiday, a move advocates say reflects growing efforts toward inclusion in Connecticut classrooms.

The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, known as CAIR-CT, praised the Bethel Board of Education’s decision in a statement Friday.

“Recognizing Eid al-Fitr is more than a calendar change — it is a statement of inclusion, dignity, and respect,” said Farhan Memon, chairman of CAIR-CT.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. It is expected to be observed in late March, though the exact date depends on the lunar calendar.

Advocates said the recognition can help Muslim students feel more included and supported at school.

“When Muslim students see their holidays acknowledged, they know they are fully seen and fully valued,” Memon said.

CAIR-CT said it hopes other districts across Connecticut will consider similar policies.
