Beloved Middle School Social Studies Teacher Passed Away

A beloved Bethel Middle School Social Studies teacher passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening in his home. Superintendent of Bethel Schools Dr. Christine Carver notified parents via email on Friday:

‘It is with deep sadness that I must inform you that one of our Bethel Middle School teachers unexpectedly passed away last evening. Mr. Barrett was devoted to his students and will be missed by all. I send my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers.”

The school is offering counseling services for those who may need it.

Teaching was a second career choice for Mr. Barrett, 63, who wrote on his teacher page on the school’s website that he lived in Bethel for over forty years and was married for thirty-nine years. He is predeceased by his wife Sheila. He had two adult children, one grandchild and previously worked for thirteen years in law enforcement.

Barrett was the recipient of the Liberty Bell Award in 2013. The Liberty Bell Award is given annually to a “non-lawyer who has contributed significantly to the legal community,” Wendy Grispin told the News Times. Barrett coached the school’s mock trial team, which was also recognized for winning a regional competition.

A student expressed condolences on RateMyteachers.com: “Mr. Barrett taught mock trial for decades, and I’ve known him for 5 years. RIP Mr Barrett, you’ve made a huge impact on me and you will be missed. Thank you.”

Those who wish to pay their respects can do so on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 from 4 - 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 26 Dodgingtown Road, Bethel.
