Bethel to Consider New Ordinances, Including Expansion of Veteran Benefits and Noise Restrictions

The Bethel Board of Selectmen gave preliminary approval at its September 1st meeting to move four proposed new ordinances to a public hearing. After the public hearing, the Board of Selectmen will have 30 days to vote to finalize the proposals and encode them as law.

The proposals deal with a number of issues. The first is a noise-abatement ordinance that would restrict the hours of heavy construction and other activities capable of producing high levels of noise. The second provides penalties for dumping of yard debris or snow onto a public street. Number three prohibits unauthorized overnight parking on town-owned property. The fourth is a limitation of liability ordinance to align with certain state statutes. A fifth proposal is also expected to be reviewed at the upcoming public hearing, an ordinance which would increase property tax exemptions for military veterans.

The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00pm in Meeting Room A at the C.J. Hurgin Municipal Center. The complete text of the proposed ordinances can be found on the town website at www.bethel-ct.gov.
