Bethel Field Hockey Went Pink Tuesday for 'One of Our Own'

Editor’s note: My daughter’s field hockey team, and Brookfield Chick-fil-A, showed their true colors Tuesday night as all three games were played to support me in my almost year-long battle with a rare type of breast cancer. I am beyond grateful for all they have done and am so blessed to be a part of such an amazing community. Thank you!

The Bethel Varsity girls field hockey team ended Tuesday’s Play 4 the Cure games on a high note with a winning score of 1-0. Although the Freshman and JV teams did not win, they fought hard.

Bethel High School’s girls field hockey teams wore pink pinneys, socks and ribbons to show their support for their teammate Ruby Mitchell, JV Sophomore, whose mom (that’s me) has been battling breast cancer since January.

Bethel’s team usually plays for the American Cancer Society, however, this year one of the organizers, Diedre Hook, said they wanted to raise funds for our family, as I continue to fight the disease. Read my story by clicking here.

“We will play for your family because you’re one of our own. Ruby is our teammate, one of our kids at school and that is the way we roll at BHS,” Hook said.

Principal Chris Troetti said he wanted to come out to show his support of a BHS student and family. Last week the football team played in the Coaches Vs. Cancer games to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Brookfield Chick-fil-A donated chicken sandwiches that were sold as part of the fundraiser. Their mascot, “The Cow,” posed for photos with players and coaches.

Owner Devon Scanlon, a former Brookfield High School field hockey player, said, “I used to play field hockey myself and I know how hard you play. I was the goalie. When I heard about your fundraiser I had to come and help so that we can fight against breast cancer. This is my first time helping a Bethel team and we’ll definitely come back again. Just ask!”

“We want to do whatever we can to support our community and to support breast cancer awareness,” Scanlon said.

Pink Game Scores:

• Freshman girls lost 7-1.
• Junior Varsity girls lost 2-1 with Ruby Mitchell scoring the goal.
• Varsity girls won 1-0 with Amanda Deming scoring.

According to their website, Play4theCure is “a fundraising platform for the National Foundation for Cancer Research which provides funding worldwide to the best scientists to enable cutting edge research that other large cancer organizations can’t and won’t fund. Play4theCure inspires young athletes and their teams to leverage their passion for sports to “Play4” loved ones affected by cancer and encourages them to actively participate in working to fund cancer research to make a difference.”
