Bethel Looks to Buy Radio Tower Space for $230,000

The town currently leases capacity on the tower, but will need more for the new police station.

BETHEL, CT —The town plans to spend $230,000 to purchase space it now leases on a local radio tower to broadcast police, fire and other public safety communications, the News Times is reporting.

Currently, Bethel is a client of New England Radio Consultants whom it pays $8,800 annually for capacity on the Spring Hill Lane tower. That rent would jump to $17,000 a year once equipment for the new police station was installed. Six to eight antennas for police, fire, public works, emergency management and emergency medical services are currently on the tower.

The Board of Selectmen has approved the purchase. The next step is a sign-off by the finance board, followed by a public vote a special town meeting. No date has been set for either of these meetings.
