Bethel Ordered to Pay $183K to Redding, Easton Schools After Bus Dispute
Bethel officials said they are disappointed and surprised by the decision by a Superior Court judge to make them pay $183K in tax refunds.

A Superior Court judge has ordered the Town of Bethel to pay over $180,000 in property tax refunds to Redding, Easton and Region 9 after a three-year battle, according to the News Times.
The towns garage 45 school buses and vans at a lot adjacent to the train station.
The school boards financed the purchase of a fleet of vehicles through TD Bank with DATTCO managing and operating the vehicles, Peggy Sullivan, director of finance of operations for the three districts told the News Times. The schools previously has an agreement with First Student who paid taxes to the Town of Bethel.

Bethel’s tax assessor, AnnMarie Heering, said she taxed the districts because their contract with DATTCO was a lease agreement. The lease agreement stated that the buses were not owned by the schools and were taxable by law.
