BETHEL, CT — The police are naming their Monday blood drive a success, despite the stormy weather that closed schools and kept many residents locked up inside.

In total, 48 people registered, and out of those, four were deemed ineligible to donate. The police were able to turn 44 pints of whole blood over to the Red Cross, who will create three blood products (platelets, plasma and red cells) from each.

"So, 132 patients were helped today by all your efforts!" the police thanked the community on their Facebook page.

The blood drive was in honor of Maddie O'Farrell, 12, daughter of Bethel police Detective Frank O'Farrell, who was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer.

The police will be holding another drive on Monday, May 6, once again at the Bethel Police Station.
