Governor Malloy’s Visit
Find out what's happening in Bethelfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
Last night at Bethel High School Governor Malloy presented his education reform proposal and responded to questions and concerns about elements of the reform package. The Governor’s proposal focuses on six principles:
-Enhancing family access to high quality early childhood education
Find out what's happening in Bethelfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
-Authorizing intense interventions and support to turn around Connecticut’s lowest performing schools
-Expanding availability of high quality model schools
-Unleashing innovation by removing red tape and other barriers to success
-Ensuring high quality teachers and principals in all schools through implementation of effective evaluation systems and tenure reform
-Delivering more resources to districts with the greatest need
The entire bill (SB 24) as well as a host of summaries and reactions to the bill can be found on line by conducting a simple search of CT SB 24.
The Governor stated last night that he chose to come to Bethel because we are a high achieving district that has demonstrated the ability to close the achievement gap. He commended our district for that effort and suggested that his reform package will enable other districts to do what we have done.
Dr. Jordan very eloquently expressed our district’s concerns about his teacher evaluation proposal. In response, the Governor requested that we send the language we would like to see in the bill. As a district administration, we have a number of concerns about what the impact of this bill could be on our high performing system.
Our state legislators are very clearly seeking input and feedback about the Governor’s proposal. I urge all interested residents to study the bill and express their thoughts to our local legislators.
Budget Update
On Monday night the Board of Finance voted 4-3 to reduce the Board of Education’s proposed operating budget by $400,000. The chairman noted that he believed that the Board of Education and school administration “did everything right” with this budget, but felt very strongly that the town would not approve this increase at referendum.
As I noted in my letter to the Bethel Bulletin earlier in the week, because this budget and other recent budgets over the last five years have been status quo, the only way to address the cut through a budget reduction is by eliminating staff and programs. There are still many variables and unknowns with regard to the budget so it is difficult to predict how many staff positions may need to be cut. The range could be anywhere from 2-7. Cutting any staff would be a significant detriment to our total educational program and I am pursuing every possible course of action to prevent staff reduction.
We have an exemplary school system. Cuts of this magnitude make an already extraordinarily complex and challenging task that much more difficult. It is easy for some to write off the proposed cuts as a simple need to “do more with less.” Bethel Public Schools has been, appropriately, as a down economy necessitated, doing more with less for years. We have made appropriate staff reductions, improved efficiencies, and monitored very carefully at how we spend tax dollars. Concurrently, we have realized our highest achievement levels to date, closed achievement gaps for many of our most struggling students, and expanded opportunities for students at every level. Our full day kindergarten program, introduced without adding any additional staff, is realizing academic gains that exceed our expectations!
The next step in the budget process is the Public Hearing which is scheduled for April 4th. At this hearing Bethel residents can express their viewpoints regarding proposed budgets directly to the Board of Finance.
All of the Board of Education Budget information is posted on our district website.
The Board of Education’s presentation to the BOF can be found on our homepage. (Click here)
Spread the Word
There is a great deal of good news about our schools right now. I encourage all parents and stakeholders to take some time get better acquainted with all of our budget, achievement, and program information that can be found on our website in order to understand all that we have accomplished to date and how we have done so while making every effort to contain costs. This link (Click here) will send you to a summary of recent accomplishments.

On Monday March 19th, through Friday March 23rd, we will be selling wristbands during our lunch waves titled Help Band Against Bullying. One of our 7th grade students, Gwenyth Stuard is leading this campaign to raise awareness of bullying…one band at a time. We want every child and adult to wear this wristband with pride and spread the word so that everyone knows we are going to stand united in our fight against bullying. Each band is $3 and for every band we sell, $1 goes toward our school to help support programs that raise awareness about bullying. Students who purchase a band will also be asked to sign their name on a large banner that will be displayed on one of our walls in the main lobby. Please support this very worthwhile cause. We have bands in youth and adult sizes. Below is a picture of the wristband and you can check out their website at: www.helpbandagainstbullying.org
