Bethel Says 'NO' to Crematorium Plans at Clarke Business Park

After months of opposition by Bethel business owners and residents, plans for a crematorium in Clarke Business Park have been stopped.

At Tuesday’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, board members denied the request of Shawn McLoughlin, owner of Mono-crete Step Co. LLC, to build a crematorium at Francis J. Clarke Business Park, the News Times reported.

Commission members denied his request by a 4-3 vote and said the applicant did not show that the proposed facility would not cause harmful health effects to neighbors or would not decrease property values in the area.

Local business owners in Clarke Business Park worried that emissions from the crematorium could pose a health hazard to humans and devalue neighboring properties.
