Bethel Super Proposes 3.4 Percent School Budget Hike
Contributing factors include reductions in state funding and rising enrollments.

BETHEL, CT —The schools superintendent has proposed a 3.4 percent increase in the school budget for the 2019-20 year, the News Times is reporting.
Superintendent Christine Carver presented her proposal the school board Thursday night. Her nearly $46.7 million budget calls for three new teachers and a custodian. Other contributors to the increase include reductions in state funding and rising enrollments. Within the expanding student population there is also a higher percentage of English language learners, special education students, and students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals as a result of new laws which makes any family that qualifies for Medicaid also eligible for a break on school meals.
The school board will hold budget workshops on Jan. 29, Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and if needed Feb. 12. The board will present its proposal to the selectmen and Board of Finance on Feb. 21.
