BHS ROTC Learns Ballroom Dancing, Video

ROTC students take a romantic and sophisticated turn at BHS.

Bethel High School's ROTC class is preparing for the ROTC Ball on February 19. In the coming weeks, they will be perfecting their waltz, fox trot, rhumba, salsa, swing and more.

A full 20 percent of the students at BHS participate in the ROTC. Classes include etiquette and ballroom dancing, but students may also find themselves learning how to properly handle rifles, getting their boating safety license and learning the fundamentals of flying planes.

"It's a lot of fun," student Julia Buzak said, catching her breath after whirling through the hallways with her dance partner, Nick Damraksa.

"We teach an extension of what kids learn at home," said Lt. Com. Dwinells, who is a retired Navy Officer and has been teaching for ten years. "This is a citizenship class. It teaches self-control, self-discipline. Even kids who can't sit still in other classes somehow manage to maintain their focus here."

Dwinells seems to enjoy the classes as much as the students do. "I can teach dance, aviation, and weapons safety all in the same class."
