Carbon Monoxide Detector Saves Bethel Homeowner
The homeowner woke to a carbon monoxide alarm in the morning.

BETHEL, CT — A carbon monoxide detector alerted homeowners to dangerous levels Tuesday, according to fire officials.
The alarm went off before 5 a.m. Firefighters smelled fuel oil coming from the basement, according to the News-Times.
The home was ventilated and the homeowner contacted a repairman to fix a furnace.

Each year more than 400 Americans die from CO poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, upset stomach, chest pain and confusion. Enough carbon monoxide can cause people to pass out or die.
Carbon monoxide is odorless and can be produced in high levels by faulty equipment.

The CDC recommends replacing detectors every five years. They can be bought at home improvement and other stores.
