Coronavirus Bethel: Schools Now Closed Through March 27

Schools Superintendent Christine Carver has announced that the Bethel Public Schools will be closed from March 16 through March 27.

BETHEL, CT — In a letter distributed online and to families on Friday, Schools Superintendent Christine Carver has announced that the Bethel Public Schools will be closed from March 16 through March 27. The move is being taken "in an abundance of caution," and to minimize the risk of spreading the new coronavirus.

"We recognize that this negatively impacts many of our families, particularly as it relates to child care. In an abundance of caution, we feel the closure prioritizes student and staff safety. We will provide you with periodic updates throughout the closure," Carver said.

Carver also clarified what Governor Ned Lamont's Executive Order No. 7 in regard to the waiver for the 180-day school year might mean for Bethel Schools.

"It allows school districts who close for any reason related to COVID-19 risk to apply for a waiver if they can not meet the 180 day requirement by July 1st, after they have exhausted all other options to make up the time," Carver said.

In the letter, the superintendent reckoned that it would be "highly likely" that Bethel Public Schools would be in school over April break, and, depending upon the total number of days missed, in school through June 30, but not beyond.
