Girls LAX Dominates Lancers

Using a balanced scoring attack, the Bethel girls lacrosse team upended Notre Dame-Fairfield.

With a light drizzle falling throughout the game at DeSantis Field, the Bethel girls lacrosse team poured it on against SWC opponent Notre Dame-Fairfield. The Wildcats (2-5, 2-5) scored seven times in the first 10 minutes en route to a 15-2 win.

“We played really well, our sticks were on, we were passing, we had really balanced scoring which I love to see,” Coach Shelly DeSisto said. “I like to see team offense like that, we had two or three pass transitions down the field which was great, our defense communicated and worked well together, I think all that contributed to a really nice win for us.”

From the onset the Wildcats dominated possession and continuously made the Lancers pay for their defensive breakdowns.

“I think that was great for the girls to see,” DeSisto said. “Once we gained possession either through a turnover or a save or whatever it was, we kept possession on the offensive side of the field, we felt confident about controlling the game.”

Samantha Davenport, Anna Fiorini, Kaitlin Desimone and Laura Steinmetz all scored twice for the Wildcats, as they raced out to an 11-0 halftime lead before letting off the gas in the second half.

“Sam and Laura are my senior captains,” DeSisto said. “They are two of our stars, not just in the fact that they often lead our scoring, but that they really help run the transition, the defense, the offense, they’re full field players.”

Marcella Lavras, Alexa Witcofsky, Angela Franzese, Jessica DeCarie and Taylor Freitas each scored their first career varsity goals.

“I was happy to see a lot of girls who have never scored goals before, had goals today,” DeSisto said. “I’m hoping that boosts their confidence, I have a lot of underclassmen that are kind of timid on the field, I’m hoping that this helps them see their potential.”

Stephanie Forese was seldom tested in net and finished the game with four saves.

Bethel will host Brookfield on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. After that they will travel to Watertown for a 5:30 p.m. game.
