Letter: 'Putting My Support Behind Raghib Allie-Brennan'
"As someone who identifies as transgender, I am fed up with anyone who cannot commit to the prosperity and well-being of each citizen..."
Dear Editor:
My stomach turns at the thought of each election cycle because it signifies yet another opportunity for an attack on basic human rights. As someone who identifies as transgender, I am fed up with anyone who cannot commit to the prosperity and well-being of each citizen. For this reason, I am putting my support behind Raghib Allie-Brennan, whose voting record has always shown his unwavering commitment to fight discrimination of all kinds.
His opponent, Dan Carter, is attempting another shot at the state legislature, where he will once again jeopardize the rights of those who already find themselves in a precarious position. His voting record proves that we have a lot to fear from a Carter candidacy.

In 2011, Carter was one of 62 legislators who voted against HB6599, a bill prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression. Then, in 2014, he was one of 55 voting against HB 5274, a measure that prohibited employers from discriminating against unemployed applicants.
In both cases, the bills (which fortunately passed despite Carter’s opposition) sought to protect those members of our society who needed it most, and in each Carter showed himself to be on the wrong side of ethical and compassionate behavior.

Once again, with Raghib Allie-Brennan in the statehouse, I have less reason to fear that basic
human rights will be torn away from me, and can be assured that someone is fighting for me and others who need protection from discriminatory laws.
