Obituary: John Smietana, 74, Of Bethel

John served in the U.S. Air Force prior to a successful career in banking and finance.

BETHEL, CT — John Smietana, age 74, of Bethel, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021. He was born to the late Peter and Phyllis (Rosedahl) Smietana in Buffalo, New York on May 12, 1947.

John served in the U.S. Air Force prior to a successful career in banking and finance. He graduated from University at Buffalo and went on to receive his MBA at Long Island University where he took on roles of increasing responsibility with the IRS and several credit unions before his retirement from Stamford Credit Union in 2016.

John is survived by his daughter Katie Beaudry (Ryan), son Andrew Smietana, granddaughter Aubree Beaudry, and grandson Nolan Beaudry. He is also survived by his sister Joanne Phillips (late John), brother Peter (Karen Moroz), and nephew Alex as well as several friends.

He enjoyed traveling, rooting for the Yankees, collecting records, reading, and spending time with friends while staying active. In earlier years, John never missed a game of Katie and Andy's softball and baseball games.

John was married to the love of his life, Jane Smietana, for 40 years before she passed away in 2017.

Calling hours for John will be held Friday, June 25, 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St, Danbury, Connecticut 06810 with a memorial service at 11:00 am ET officiated by the Rev. Dr. Dustin Trowbridge of St. James' Church Danbury. A private graveside service for immediate family will be held directly following at Sharon Gardens Cemetery, Valhalla, New York.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Regional Hospice Center located at 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, CT 06810.
