'I think Bethel is bigger than the fears you have for the off-chance some fringe hate group would apply for display of offensive imagery.'
An Open Letter to the First Selectman Regarding the Religious Display Discussion

I note that the Bethel BOS has the religious display discussion on tonight’s agenda. I believe you had noted, previously, that an all or “ban everything” decision would be made "by Sept 1". I presume this will be done this evening, and not delayed or tabled again. This letter is intended as correspondence for the meeting.
It’s my hope that "all" is recognized as the only "good" choice, and it’s the only choice that shows real courage.

I think Bethel is bigger than the fears you have for the off-chance some fringe hate group would apply for display of offensive imagery. Don’t you have as much faith in the people of Bethel as I do?
All the feedback I’ve received regarding the proposed addition of a Menorah in the vicinity of the nativity scene has been positive, and with several electric outlets between the "holiday tree" and the nativity, a small area to the side of the tree seems a great location, all things considered. You can get many legal what-if opinions, all speculative about what might or could be. All speculation and what-iffing!
A decision to ban the Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, Solstice, non-religious display(s) from our public square would be a horrible decision, and a slap to the hundreds of people who show up each year to enjoy the winter festivities. I truly enjoy the tree lighting, and appreciate a happy holiday message from good people who do not profess religious belief. It’s all positive.
All that said, it would also be a personal affront to me, as we, and in conversations I’ve had with other First Selectmen have had many positive exchanges in the past about the addition of a Menorah over the years (more than the small one I gave for use in town hall many years ago).
Some 62 people have donated $2500 to add more light to the existing light of the season, and the Menorah has been purchased. You also need to recognize the over $5000 donated and countless hours of effort to rejuvenate the beautiful nativity scene a couple of years ago. The generosity of volunteers deserves the continued place in the Public Square, OUR public Square, as it has been for decades.
Do the right thing. Let ALL enjoy ALL the displays on the people’s PT Barnum Square.
