Opinion: 'Eileen Freebairn, Patricia Smithwick and Claudia Stephan Are Serving With Distinction'

"If you believe that Bethel Boards should work together in a climate of mutual respect...join me in returning three experienced women..."

Four years ago the seven-member Bethel Board of Finance was all male and all one party. The seven members included registered Republicans who comprised the majority and registered Independents, hand picked to run on the Republican ticket in order to satisfy minority requirements.

There were no Democrats; there were no females.

That Board’s main characteristic was their incivility to the First Selectman. Publicly calling the First Selectman a liar; not allowing the First Selectman, an ex-officio member to speak were common place.

This is the board that removed budget support for Meals on Wheels.

Three women, all Democrats, ran against the incumbents. Who are these women and how did they get elected? They are mothers, grandmothers, widows, a business owner, a financial planner and a retired banker. How did they win? They personally pledged to work together with the Boards of Selectmen and Education and to do so in a civil and respectful manner.

Eileen Freebairn, Patricia Smithwick and Claudia Stephan are serving with distinction. As role models they have changed the manner in which the Finance Board has conducted its business and its interaction with other boards and elected officials. They have done this even though they only represent a minority on the board. They will do so again when reelected.

The choice is clear. If you believe that Bethel Boards should work together in a climate of mutual respect; if you care about education, if you care about our neighbors who are in need, please join me in returning three experienced women to the Board of Finance.

Vote for Eileen Freebairn, Patricia Smithwick and Claudia Stephan on Row A on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd for real minority representation.
