OPINION: Malloy Is 'Flipping the Bird' To CT Citizens For Allowing Syrian Refugees

Bethel resident: "Our programs are being cut, taxes are going up and our safety is taking a backseat to his tired liberal ideology."

A Bethel resident responded to a recent article about the Syrian refugee crisis that quoted Wendy Cahill, owner of Molten Java, as saying:

“Welcoming Syrian families into our state is one very real and positive way that we can fight Islamic fundamentalism. Some fear may be justified but we can’t let it override the fact that there could be 1600 More Syrians fighting fundamentalists in the West. We need to take that chance and show our humanity. ”

To the editor,

Frankly, when someone as misinformed as Ms. Cahill makes a comment such as: “We’ve seen it happen in Afghanistan before we put the Taliban in charge,” I immediately am turned off by anything else she writes. Consequently, her opinions and suggestions have zero bearing on the rest of her argument for why the people of CT should accept Syrian refugees.

First a little education for Ms. Cahill, “We” in the west did NOT put the Taliban in charge in Afghanistan. They [the Taliban] arose after the failed USSR occupation in that country back in the 1980s. They were initially funded and educated by a particular Muslim sect known as Wahabism out of Saudi Arabia in a humanitarian effort to care for the numerous young [male] orphans created by the long struggle to defend their country from the Russians. Regrettably, this particular Sunni sect, which is frequently described as ultra conservative, orthodox and fundamentalist, is the basis on which much of the contemporary radical islamist doctrines are built. Most of all, I find Ms. Cahill’s remark “if we are putting the homeland at risk, I say, so be it” as one of complete idealogical ignorance and stupidity. I am sure my friends with children and who share my point of view on this issue are so pleased to know she cares not for their safety nor for their future patronage.

On a different point, it is unsettling to say the least our Governor Malloy, who is looking at many different and austere ways to plug [enormous] holes in our state budget, including cutting social welfare programs for CT citizens, such as drug and psychiatric programs listed in an article run by the Patch less than a week ago, can find the funds to support well over 1,500 proposed refugees coming into this state.

Despite ISIS stating its intent to infiltrate the West with Jihadis included in the wave of refugees, providing a terrorist list of targeted cities in the US, evidence at least one terrorist from the tragedy in Paris this past weekend was initially processed as a “refugee” coming through Greece. Our own governmental agencies in charge of the vetting process stating they do not have proper infrastructure to properly process incoming asylum seekers, this clown is flipping the “bird” to the citizens of this state. Our programs are being cut, taxes are going up and our safety is taking a backseat to his tired liberal ideology.

Until there is a quality vetting process for accepting refugees from the Middle East, I challenge those from IRIS to consider putting their livelihoods and/or personal assets up as collateral to guaranty the people they are sponsoring to enter our community will not perpetrate terrorism against the US. Their ideas, though undeniably compassionate, cannot trump the safety and well being of community without significant assurances.

Very Truly Yours, Peter D.
