Photos: Bethel Navy JROTC Cadets Go Sailing
Information and photos sent by Cadet/ Petty Officer 2nd Class Jaclyn Veilleux, Bethel NJROTC's Public Affairs Officer.
Last week, on Monday, Oct. 17, the NS2's (sophomores) in the Bethel Navy JROTC program went on a field trip to the Long Island Sound in Bridgeport, Conn. to go sailing.
After two weeks of studying coastal navigation and sailing 101 (which includes; traffic in the water, safety, boat maintenance, knot tying, and of course, how to drive the vessel)m Naval Science Instructor Lt. Commander Mark Dwinells decided it was time for them to have some hands on learning.
Although the Sound was windier than hoped for, that did not stop the cadets from enjoying their experience. After the field trip the NS2's have the opportunity to take a boating test to see if they are qualified for a Connecticut State Boating License.

Many former NS2 cadets who have taken the sailing course qualify for the license, and own one. There's no other place where sophomores in high school are licensed to sail before their driving permit. This experience is another one of the perks Bethel's Navy JROTC program brings to the community of Bethel.
