Wildcats Lose to Farmington in Semi-Finals

By Patricia McCormick

The Bethel High School Girls Soccer team, seeded 12th, played against 8th seed Farmington. The game started an hour later than expected on a frigid night in Meriden.

The entire first half of the game played out like an equal tug-o-war. Bethel girls had a series of passes bringing it toward the Farmington goal, only to have their defense hold us back. Then Farmington would attack with Bethels defensive players denying them a goal as well.

Even with both teams having aggressive advances on goal the first half ended 0–0.

But then 12 minutes into the second half, Farmington scored on a corner kick that slid in past an almost flawless Alicia Alves. It was less than a minute later that Bethel had a chance to score on a rare call, which resulted in a free kick by senior Bridget Conway. With the Farmington goalie down Bethel was unable to capitalize.

It was a very good game, with both sides of the ball playing hard. This was a tense, tight game.

First year coach Mitchell Trainor said: “Yes, it was a great season watching these girls get so far. It is unfortunate the way it ended, but am looking forward to next season with this group.”

He added: “I really want to thank all the seniors on this team for giving it their all.”

When asked about her last game, senior Autumn Sorice said: “I am proud of the season we had. I am proud that we played our best, and am proud that we were able to set a record for our school. I really could not have asked for a better team or season.”
