BRANFORD, CT — Early Wednesday morning, firefighters were called to a West Main Street nail salon for a structure fire, Branford Fire Department noted in a new release.

It was around 10 a.m. when Branford Emergency Communications received a 911 call reporting smoke inside Nail Expressions, 609 West Main St. The business occupies the end unit of a six-business commercial strip at this address, fire officials said.

Staff "arriving for work opened the door to the business and encountered smoke and visible flames" and called 911 immediately, the fire department said.

The owner of an adjacent business made an initial effort to contain the fire using a dry chemical fire extinguisher prior to the arrival of fire crews, fire officials said.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and were met with "heavy smoke throughout the commercial occupancy," with crews quickly advancing hose lines, officials said. Firefighters conducted a "coordinated interior fire attack and located a smoldering fire within the structure."

The adjoining business, Master Shears Salon, sustained smoke damage as a result of the fire and is temporarily closed, the fire department noted in a news release, adding that the business may reopen later today pending final cleanup and evaluation.

"Responding Branford units included Cars 1, 2, 6, and 9; Engines 1, 2, 7, and 9; Truck 1; and Medic 3," the department noted on Facebook.

The East Haven Fire Department responded to the initial alarm as automatic aid, and the Guilford Fire Department responded as the Rapid Intervention Team, fire officials said.

"The Branford Fire Department extends its appreciation to both departments for their assistance," the department wrote. "The Branford Police Department also assisted, helping obtain video evidence and witness information. We thank them for their cooperation and assistance."

The department noted that no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Following an investigation by the Branford Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire has been determined to be accidental in nature, fire officials said.

"Investigators have identified an electrical failure involving a device as the origin of the fire, supported by video evidence," they said. The exact component involved remains under investigation.
