"Initial reports indicate that one vehicle struck stopped traffic at a high rate of speed, resulting in a chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles," the Branford Fire Department said in a news release.

A total of six patients were evaluated and transported; two are reported serious but not life-threatening at this time, fire officials said.

All southbound lanes were closed for approximately 45 minutes for emergency crews to operate safely. All lanes are now open.

Additionally, a fire captain operating at the scene sustained a dog bite injury. The injury does not appear to be serious, and the captain continued to work at the scene before later being transported by North Branford Ambulance for medical evaluation, fire officials said.

The canine involved in the crash also suffered serious injuries and was transported to Cosgrove Animal Shelter for treatment and care. The incident remains under investigation.
