BRANFORD, CT — Branford Police are alerting the community to a scam where the perpetrator pretends to be a town official and requests money.
"We have received several reports of someone pretending to be from the Town of Branford Planning and Zoning. The suspect is requesting money be sent to them via wire to Fifth Third Bank through the Strip application," police said.
"Planning and Zoning does not accept payment in this manner," police noted.
"The suspect is doing research, as the invoices that are being sent to potential victims have work done that requires oversight/permits from Planning and Zoning, so it is reasonable to believe that someone would make the payment," police said.
We have also received reports of text messages from the fraudulent "Connecticut District Court-Traffic Violation Summons" regarding unpaid traffic violations," police said.
"This is also a scam! If you have provided funds to either of these scams and are a Branford resident, you may contact our non-emergency line regarding the fraud at 203-481-4241."
"Please share with your friends and neighbors about these ongoing scams," police said.
