Overnight Short Beach Road Kitchen Fire Sent One Occupant To Hospital For Smoke Inhalation: BFD

BRANFORD, CT—Not long after midnight Wednesday, Branford firefighters were called to a Short Beach Road structure fire, officials said.

The first crews to arrive found a fire in the kitchen area of a single-family residence, the department noted in a news release. Firefighters quickly contained and extinguished the fire, preventing further extension throughout the home, they said.

One person inside the home was evaluated on scene and then transported by Branford Fire EMS to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Units responding included Branford Engines 1, 9, M.P. Rice Hose Co 2, Ladder Truck 1, Medic 1, and Cars 1, 6, 8, and 9.

Automatic mutual aid assistance was provided by the East Haven Fire Department and the Guilford Fire Department, who responded to provide Rapid Intervention Team coverage.

There were no firefighter injuries reported.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature and originated in the microwave oven after combustible materials stored inside ignited.
