From the Branford Police Department:
"With the nice weather finally here, the Branford Police Department has observed a noticeable increase in electric bikes (e-bikes) throughout the town. Our goal is not only enforcement, but the safety of our community. We ask for the cooperation of parents, guardians, and riders to help prevent serious injury or tragedy.
Reports of juveniles and young adults operating these vehicles in a dangerous and unlawful manner, including riding on sidewalks and in large groups, disregarding traffic control devices, and operating on active roadways without regard for other motorists or pedestrians, will be investigated and taken seriously for the safety of our town.
E-bikes are subject to Connecticut regulations and are classified based on speed and motor capability; those that exceed legal limits or have been modified may be considered motor vehicles, requiring proper registration, licensing, and insurance.
Operating these vehicles recklessly, or in violation of Connecticut General Statutes, may result in infractions, misdemeanor charges, or more serious criminal charges depending on the circumstances. Individuals found to be operating these vehicles in violation of the law will be subject to enforcement action, including summonses, arrests, and the seizure of vehicles when appropriate.
For juveniles involved in these incidents, parents and guardians may also be held accountable. Under Connecticut law, parents may face liability if they knowingly allow a minor to engage in illegal or dangerous conduct, including the improper use of motorized vehicles.
We encourage all residents to familiarize themselves with Connecticut laws regarding the operation of e-bikes and mopeds and to ensure that these vehicles are used safely and legally.
We have attached information from Watch for Me CT and from the CT Department of Transportation. Whether you're considering purchasing an e-bike or you or a family member is already riding one regularly, we encourage you to take a few minutes to review the information and ride safely."
