Every school day in Branford, there are moments that might seem small from the outside but can mean everything to a student.

It might be the moment a child who has struggled with a math problem finally sees how the pieces fit together. It might be a student learning to navigate the school day a little more independently, joining classmates in an activity for the first time, or finding the confidence to raise a hand and share an idea.

And very often, standing nearby with a word of encouragement, a helping hand, or simply the patience to try one more time, is a paraeducator.

Across Branford Public Schools, paraeducators play an important role in helping students learn, grow, and feel that they belong. They work alongside teachers and other
school professionals, supporting students in classrooms, small groups, and one-on-one.

Some help reinforce reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Others assist students with disabilities, English learners, or children who need additional support to participate fully
in the school day.

But the work of a paraeducator is about much more than completing an assignment or mastering a lesson.

It is about relationships.

In Branford, a paraeducator may be the familiar face waiting for a student who finds mornings difficult. The encouraging voice reminding a child, 'You can do this.'

The person who recognizes when a student needs a little extra help and also knows when it is time to step back and let that student discover what they can accomplish independently.

Over time, those everyday interactions can add up to something remarkable: confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging.

Branford Public Schools currently has openings for paraeducators in our schools, offering community members an opportunity to become part of the teams that support Branford students every day.

Patience matters. Compassion matters. Reliability matters. A willingness to listen, learn, and celebrate a child's progress matters. Most of all, it takes someone who believes that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed.

For those who have a high school diploma or equivalent but do not yet have the college credits, Shoreline Adult Education's ParaPathways program can help bridge the gap.

Shoreline Adult Education administers the ParaPathways test and offers a specialized preparation course designed to help prospective paraeducators strengthen their skills
and prepare for the assessment.

The next course begins on Sept. 14, with classes meeting Monday and Wednesday evenings at Branford High School.
Participants can choose a traditional preparation course or an expanded option that includes a paid internship, providing the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience in a classroom while earning back tuition costs.
