BRANFORD, CT — Over the past few weeks, Branford firefighters have been involved in myriad skill-building exercises, including at the New Haven Fire Academy's live burn training and specialized rope rescue refresher training and rope rescues and trench rescue training.

"These opportunities allow our members to train in realistic environments and maintain the skills necessary to respond safely and effectively to the unexpected emergencies that may arise," the department shared in social media posts documenting recent exercises.

The New Haven Fire Academy live burn training, with the theme 'Overcoming Obstacles,' "challenged firefighters to work through common fireground obstacles ..."

"Some scenarios were inspired by challenges encountered at recent fires in Branford and surrounding communities, while others addressed issues commonly faced by fire departments nationwide," the department explained. "The goal was to challenge our firefighters to think critically, adapt to changing conditions, and work together to overcome obstacles. Every obstacle can be overcome with sound tactics, effective communication, and teamwork."

Earlier this month, the Branford Fire Department and the Guilford Fire Department worked together on specialized rope technician and trench technician skills at the Stony Creek Quarry.

In a post to Facebook, Branford firefighters thanked both the Quarry and A&W Sanitation in Guilford, which provided firefighters the "opportunity to dig trenches for refresher training."

"Without the generosity and support of local businesses and community partners, this type of hands-on training would be much more difficult to accomplish," the department said. "Their willingness to support our departments directly contributes to our readiness to serve and protect our communities."

Branford and Guilford fire departments, it's noted, have a "longstanding partnership."

"Over the years, this partnership has allowed us to develop and maintain multiple technician-level rescue teams, strengthen our capabilities, and provide mutual aid during larger, more complex incidents," the department posted. "By working and training together, we continue to build the teamwork, trust, and proficiency needed when our communities need us most."
