Branford Head of Public Works and Tree Warden Art Baker quickly responded to our query (on Easter Sunday!) that the trees were, in fact, Bradford pear trees planted during the 80s' downtown revitalization. According to Better Homes & Garden's Plant and Tree Dictionary, the Bradford pear tree is also called the pyrus calleryana. "Snowy early-spring blossoms and a tall pyramidal shape make flowering pear the ideal lawn tree for home landscapes. It also tolerates urban conditions such as air pollution," the encyclopedia states.
