BRANFORD, CT — The staff at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter have at once a rewarding but hard, and sometimes heartbreaking job.

Wednesday was the latter.

And after a difficult day when workers rescued dozens of abandoned and sick cats and kittens from a "hording house," now, they need help to save the lives of at least 20 cats, and maybe more.

"Today was a very long and sad day. We assisted the state on a hoarding case and removed 20 cats and kittens from an extremely filthy feces and urine hoarding house. The cats have lived there for at least a year without any humans. There are probably 15 more we haven't caught, but we will continue to assist until we can get them all," the shelter shared on its Facebook page.

"These cats are all in need of immediate medical care. Some have open wounds where their eye sockets are. Some have upper respiratory infections. Some seem dehydrated and others are just in shock. All of the cats and kittens are at our veterinary hospital at this time, but we desperately need to raise money to care for all of them."
