Teaching artist Eliza Orleans began a monthly artist-in-residence series as part of Long Wharf Theatre’s Partnering Artists In Residence (P.A.I.R.) program, integrating theatre arts with the reading and writing curricula.

The weekly Outdoor Education class this week had students walking the glacial moraine at Hammonasset State Park as part of a study of geologic time and ancient civilizations, with Ranger Russ of Meigs Point Nature Center.
Science, History, Literature, Grammar, Writers’ Workshop, and the list goes on. In today’s Why Cook? class, the group discussed health and nutrition, considering ingredients that early people may have had available and compared that with how our diets have evolved over time. This led to an investigation about wellness, examining food labels and the benefits and risks of sodium to a human body.

Real learning occurs as the interactions involve focus, listening, and consideration of one another as we care for our community, strive to build skills, and fully develop in all the areas that we can!
These days with movies entitled “Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life” students at CELC may be considered outliers! CELC students actually love their middle school (5th – 8th grade) years!
