Exciting Art Series for ages 9 - 14 at CELC Middle School

CT Experiential Learning Center (CELC) Spring 2015 Art Series:

Peace by Piece: Ourselves, Our Community, Our World

Through studio art, students are invited to explore themes of self-identity, community, and the interconnection of these to the world. Students will start with expressive self-portraits during Week I, move on to represent the community during Week II, and finally create a 3-D art work depicting the world in Week III. Beginning with these themes as they are depicted through Art History, the series includes the opportunity for cross-curricular connections, discussions, group work, and independent studio work for a creative exploration about what it means to be an individual in today’s society and a citizen of today’s world.

Week I

Portraits and Self-Portraits: “And Let It Begin with Me”

- Students study and discuss portraits and self-portraits from an Art History context.

- With the guide of a checklist, students paint their own expressive self-portraits.

Media: paper, paint, markers, and glitter

Week II

Family, Friends and Community: “Brothers All Are We”

- Students review and react to a variety of family and friend portraits, and townscapes and cityscapes from Art History.

- Students brainstorm ideas about the definitions of family, friends and community, and create collages to signify community.

Media: paper, newspaper, magazines, and paper scraps

Week III

Our World: “The Peace that Was Meant to Be”

What kind of impact does and can the individual and community make in a larger context? How do people share an interconnection and commonality? How do choices and actions affect everyone?

These questions and more will be explored through depictions in Art History.

Students create a 3-D representation of the world as they see it, as they have experienced it, how it is and how they hope it could be.

Through the use of found objects, the interconnection of all humans and their impact on the planet will be reinforced.

Media: assorted found objects for repurposing/upcycling
