Award-Winning Theatre Actress Elizabeth Wilson, 94, of Branford Dies

She leaves behind a legacy of more than 70 years in the industry including starring in such films as "The Graduate."

Tony Award-winning actress Elizabeth Wilson, of Branford, has died at 94. She is best known for playing character roles in films such as “The Graduate” and “9 to 5.”

Elizabeth Morton, who is serving as a spokeswoman for the family at this time, told the New Haven Register that Wilson lived in Branford with her sister and passed away on Saturday at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Wilson was an alumna of The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. In her obituary on Legacy.com, the school of theatre’s Board of Directors wrote, “A remarkable talent and spirit, Ms. Wilson was, for almost 70 years, an unstoppable force in the American Theatre.”

Wilson won the Tony award for best actress after playing Harriet in the 1972 Broadway production of “Sticks and Bones.” She is most likely best known for her roles as the mother of Dustin Hoffman’s character in “The Graduate” and Roz in “9 to 5.”

The Board of Director’s also wrote, “Her talent and her kindness will not soon be forgotten.”

She also had numerous roles both on stage and television throughout her career.

Wilson had resided in Branford since 1988.
