Barkers of Branford: Electricity Comes To Branford Part II

"We Have To Work Until 6 o'clock. Don't like it"

Transmission lines were stretched from the new Electric Power Plant at the Branford River and Route 1 to the Branford Lock Works, a mile up Main Street toward the town center. The new plant was right in Llewellyn's neighborhood and was about to impact him "at the shop" where he worked, the Branford Lock Works.

“They have just got the Electric lights ready for us at the shop. Evening we went down to the Electric plant children and all” 11/11/1895

Up to this time, the source of light at all the factories in town was limited to that which naturally beamed through large windows and with kerosene or gas lamps as backup for the waning daylight hours of winter. This was about to change.

“they have got the Electric light running and we have to work until 6 o'clock” 11/12/1895

The above commentary provided no insight into his feelings. The following Monday, however, he left no doubt.

“We work until 6 o'clock now. Don’t like it” 11/18/1895
