BRANFORD, CT — The singularly important purpose in forever banning single use plastic bags is to "protect and improve the environment of Branford including its coastline and marine life, and the health, safety, and welfare of its residents."

Adopted in June, the town ordinance that bans the bags goes into effect Tuesday, Dec. 12. No store in the town can use the single-use bags. Period. And if they do, it's first an official warning then after, a first violation comes with a civil fine of $150. That can be reduced to $50 for the first violation in exchange for eight hours of community service to the town to improve the environment.

Retailers can charge $.10 for each a recyclable paper bag, but not for seniors, or people who receive SNAP or the supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children, WIC.

Police can enforce the new town law, but so too can people who work, an "enforcement officer" designated by the Board of Selectmen.
