Big Changes Proposed for New Senior Center in Branford
Consultant recommends Community House renovation and additions to replace Canoe Brook for Branford seniors.

Big changes are possibly coming for Branford’s seniors.
Branford First Selectman James B. Cosgrove announced Tuesday that Sandra Vlock, principal of Arbonies King Vlock, will present her firm’s Senior Project: Program and Services Assessment Report and recommendation to the Board of Selectmen on Wednesday March 4.
The Report---based on community input, resource assessment, projected demographics and feasibility analysis---recommends interior and exterior renovations and additions to the Branford Community House that will create a “shared-use” facility to replace the current Canoe Brook Senior Center.

The recommended concept will improve access to community resources and public transportation for Branford seniors, the first selectman said.
The recommendation, which Vlock calls the “The Branford Model” will transform both the Community House and the Hammer Field area around it to create a space that is consistent with the 2008 Plan of Conservation and Development and meets the user needs identified for current and future seniors.

“After extensive public meetings, workshops and examination of alternative models,” Vlock said, “we are confident that our recommendation to renovate the Community House as a new home for Branford’s senior community is the smartest way to go.”
The report looked at three possible models for a new Center, “Stand-Alone,” “Hub and Spoke,” and “Shared Use.” AKV’s “Branford Model” will be a fully-integrated shared-use facility with linkages to community resources and convenient access, officials said.
“What we propose is the creation of a meaningful environment for seniors with dedicated areas that support unique programs and activities,” Vlock added.
The report will be shared with representatives of Voices for Branford Seniors and key Town Department Heads Tuesday in advance of the full presentation to the Board of Selectmen on Wednesday.
In a letter to Cosgrove many months ago, the Voices group indicated support for a “multi-purpose building” that could serve several functions.
“This proposal gives our seniors increased space, safer access and more resources,” Cosgrove said. “It is over 14,000 usable square feet bigger than Canoe Brook, with 10 acres of contiguous outdoor area for recreational and outdoor program area.”
Cosgrove will ask the Board to accept the Report and refer it to the newly established Public Building Commission for the development and issuance of a design services RFP.
Cosgrove will also be making a formal request for funding from the Board of Finance for the design work.
“This will be a great way for the Public Building Commission to begin its important work,” Cosgrove stated.
