Captain's Log: Week Four - Who's Weeding this Garden?

Organic gardening in the rain.

Between the (note my rain gauge)  and the nature of weeds, there seems to be an organized incursion going on in the garden bed.  My kingdom, for a mini, eco-safe flame thrower to dissolve the grass around the inside perimeter.  However, there is good growth on the tomatoes, tomatillos and the pepper plants.  According to my calendar, I should be able to pick things at the end of this month and since that seems ludicrous, I had to question from which starting point to calculate the "88 days to harvest."  Is it from when you put the seeds in the ground, when they first break the surface or when the first "true" leaves appear?  I did get a helpful hint about the onions – when the leaves fall over, they're ready.  It's like they've given up growing and are saying, "Take us now and put us in a salsa."  Sadly, I am reduced to "playing it by ear"– not my strong suit.  My ear wants a metronome, not a Grateful Dead song.
