Captain's Log: Week Six: A visit to Outpost Prime (aka Shelley's)
Organic gardening and fighting weeds.
Week six brings some long-awaited changes. A trip to and I'm implimenting new hardware, organic agents of weed warfare and one cannot live without tip: weeding in the rain. Or at least, weeding in the damp. Shelley's owner responded to my wedding vexations with two pieces to the puzzle. One being the tip of weeding when the soil is wet, as it makes it easier to pull out weeds roots and all. Easier? Pff! Like pulling meat off a properly slow-roasted on a spit animal. They practically shoot themselves out of the ground into your weed tray! Two, add organic corn gluten as a pre-emergent herbicide. Once the weeds are removed, shake the corn gluten over the area (and it is fine around established plants) you don't want weeds to inhabit.
The hardware comes in the form of cages around the tomato plants. There are decided signs of life on the tomatillo plants, as well as the strawberries, who have incidentally jumped the fence and are growing on the other side of my cuckoo nest.
Shelley's offers gardening tips if you friend them on Facebook. Worth it, hands down.
