When I first started working for the Branford Police Department in 1972 I was told a story by several of the "old timers." The circus had arrived in New Haven and the animal keepers needed extra room for some of the trucks and wagons. A suitable location was found in Branford and the animals were taken there. Sometime during the animals' visit to Branford, a lion escaped. The Branford Police Department was notified and with loaded weapons, went on a lion hunt. The situation became more desperate when a group of school children reported seeing the animal.I recently spoke to one of the officers involved who told me that the lion was never seen and as far as he knew it was never reported found either.
